Why I Always Pack Snow Chains

Over the years, I’ve learned one simple rule, prepare for more than you think you’ll need

Winter Tires Make All the Difference. Good winter tires are essential. They’re designed with softer rubber compounds and deeper tread patterns that stay flexible in cold temperatures and grip better on snow and ice. Even if the roads look clear, temperatures alone can affect traction. If you’re planning a winter road trip, proper winter tires should be your first priority.

Driving a 4x4 and still packing chains
So far on my winter road trip 26, I haven’t used my snow chains and I hope I won’t need to, but I never travel winter roads without them.
4x4 helps me move, but it doesn’t guarantee me stop safely on ice.

Lessons from our RV Days

Before driving 4x4, when we were traveling in our RV, we used snow chains several times. It´s heavier, and once traction is compromised, you really feel it. In those situations, chains weren’t just helpful, they were necessary.

Invest in good winter tires
Carry snow chains
Check the weather forecast
Drive with patience

Because on winter roads, it’s always better to be prepared than surprised.
Believe me, I learned that lesson the hard way.

Many years ago, we went to Norway without proper winter tires. At the time, we thought we would be fine. The roads didn’t look that bad when we started out. But once we hit real winter conditions, the car began sliding more than it should. Every small turn felt unpredictable. Every downhill stretch made my heart race.

I remember that trip as incredibly stressful. I didn’t feel safe on the road, and when you don’t feel safe while driving, you can’t enjoy the journey. Instead of admiring the beautiful winter landscape, I was focused on one thing only, staying in control.

That experience changed how I prepare for winter travel.

Today, I have no problem driving alone in our van. The difference? Proper winter tires, careful planning, and always bringing snow chains. I check the weather forecast before every longer drive, especially in mountain areas. If conditions change, I want to be ready.
